Byzantine Museum of Zante
zakynthos Byzantine MuseumThe Byzantine Museum of Zante is located in the square of Solomos. If one goes to the right of its entrance, they can go up to the second floor and cross the entire length of the building before going back down to the entrance for a second time. The museum houses a rich collection of portable icons, a veritable panorama of ecclesiastical painting from the years of the Byzantium until the 19 th century with approximately a thousand hagiographies of post-Byzantine, Ionian and Zakynthian art. The works of Damaskinos, Tzane, Kallergis, Doxaras, Koutouzis and Tsonis are all exhibited. Even though the museum's older exhibits are characteristic samples of Byzantine art, the work of Panagiotis Doxaras (1622-1700) who studied in Venice, are naturalistic and belong to the Ionian School. Doxaras' son, Nikolaos, continued the western tradition, as did Nikolaos Koutouzis (1741-1813), whose work one can see in the museum as well as in the church of Aghios (Saint) Dionysios. The iconostases of the church of the Pantocrator, the church of Aghios (Saint) Demetrios and the external part of the church of Aghios (Saint) Andreas of Volimos are all housed in the museum. Also housed in the museum are Hellenistic and Byzantine sculptures and statues.
