Certain old churches of Zakynthos, which were saved and renovated after the earthquakes of 1953, are of special significance. The church of the patron saint of the island, Aghios (Saint) Dionysios, which is located in the center of the city and in which the holy relics of the saint are kept, is one of the most significant churches. Aghios (Saint) Nikolas Koiliomenou in the village of the same name, the monastery of Panagia tis Speliotissas in Orthonies, the Yperagathou monastery and the monastery of Aghios (Saint) Georgios of Krimnon after that, Aghia (Saint) Mavra and the Hypapante (the Visitation) in Machairado, are just a few of the churches of special architectural interest on the island of Zakynthos.
The monuments, witnesses of the history and civilization of a land, could not be an exception in Zakynthos. The statue of Solomos in the square of the same name, the statue of Glory personified, which is a response to the verses of the national poet of the Greeks, the statues of Foskolos and the columns that resurrect the memories of the history of the Filiki Etairia (Society of Friends) and the writings of Kalvos, can all be found on the island so that they may be learned from, they may be remembered and mainly they may be imitated. |
